Asad Umar confirms Imran Khan's stance on negotiation with political parties

  • “Imran Khan wants to give an undertaking," Umar says.
  • PTI chief is ready to partake in all kinds of APCs.
  • Party leaders laud CJP Bandial's "view to unite everyone".

In his bid to ensure political stability in the country, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan is ready to provide an undertaking for negotiations with political parties and move ahead, the party's Secretary General Asad Umar said.

“Imran Khan wants to give an undertaking. There should also be an undertaking from the government,” the PTI leader said while speaking to Geo News in Islamabad on Wednesday.

A day earlier, Khan — going against his traditional stance against sitting with political parties in the incumbent government — said he was ready to partake in all kinds of all-parties conferences (APC) for “upholding the Constitution”.

However, the PTI chief also termed the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) "a group of thieves” and not a political alliance.

Umar, while commenting on the Supreme Court’s ruling on PTI’s plea against the Election Commission of Pakistan for postponing polls in Punjab, said that Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial has spoken about the importance of all political parties agreeing on a plan of action.

“The chief justice is talking about a free environment. It is his positive view to unite everyone,” he said.

The former finance minister maintained that there should be such things on the court’s record on the basis of which the election is held.

“The chief justice is not a politician; his job is to enforce the Constitution,” the PTI member said.

He added that the PTI's government was ousted on the decision of this particular chief justice.

The country's top court, ahead of its ruling on the case, has asked the government to provide assurances that the “political temperature” would be toned down.

The court also said that the parties had to decide the direction of the circumstances while the court had to keep the facts in view when commenting on the matter of elections and their date.

Earlier today when speaking with journalists in Islamabad, Umar censured Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for lambasting the PTI chief.

“Earlier, he would ask us to dissolve the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies for an election. We dissolved both the assemblies and now he refuses to hold an election,” Umar said.

The PTI leader went on to add that the premier earlier gave statements about negotiations and how Khan never agreed to it, but now that the PTI chairman is ready for negotiations — for the sake of stability and transparent polls in the country — PM Shehbaz is asking him to apologise.

A day earlier in a fiery address in the parliament, PM Shehbaz said he was of the clear opinion that talks between the government and PTI chairman will only be possible if the former premier admits his "wrongdoings" and apologises to people for all the things he has said and done.

“Mian sahab knows that the nation is against their narrative and no one is ready to trust what they are saying after how their lives have become difficult in the last one year,” Umar said and added that this is why the prime minister is giving such haphazard statements.

Govt's move to clip CJP's power is only to pressurise judiciary: Imran Khan

  • Govt's only goal is to escape from elections, says Imran Khan.
  • Ex-PM says there is need for judicial reforms in Pakistan.
  • Handlers are in brazen collusion with rulers and neutrals are backing them, he says.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan censured the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government for its attempt to clip the discretionary powers of the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) to take suo motu notice, saying the move is intended to bring the judiciary under pressure.

"Every one of us wants judicial reforms. But, their [the PDM parties'] only goal is to escape from the election," the PTI chief said in a televised address moments after the government moved a bill "the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023" in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

The government tabled the bill just hours after CJP Umar Ata Bandial expressed displeasure with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), saying the electoral body penned its decision to postpone polls in Punjab in haste.

The CJP passed these remarks while hearing the PTI's petition challenging the Election Commission's decision to delay the Punjab elections which should take place in April under the Constitution.

Imran Khan said that there is a need for judicial reforms in Pakistan, adding that, the rulers never want to see the judiciary independent. bannerPrime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the decision in a hurry, only to put pressure on the judiciary, he underlined.

"The handlers are in brazen collusion with the rulers. The neutrals are backing them. When someone criticises them, they say that you are humiliating the institution," he said.

The rulers are extremely cruel but they wear very innocent faces, the PTI chief said, adding that members of his party's social media team have been picked up.

"At least 40 cases of terrorism have been lodged against me. Am I a terrorist? The government is doing nothing in accordance with the law," he stressed.

The former prime minister warned that if the incumbent rulers continue like this, the game will soon go out of everyone's hands. "There is still a need for a course correction", Khan said, adding the "neutrals" should correct their path as the path of fear and intimidation they have taken is backfiring.

"They also took my cook with them and are asking him what I eat. When I was the prime minister, two of my servants were put on parole and had also asked Shahbaz Gill what I eat. Will this not make anyone suspicious why they want to know what someone eats?" he alleged.

He reiterated that the only solution to the current problems is fair and transparent elections.

Judge threatening case: Imran Khan’s non-bailable arrest warrant issued

ISLAMABAD: An Islamabad court on Wednesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the judge-threatening case.

Civil judge Malik Aman announced the verdict rejecting former premier Imran Khan's petition seeking exemption from today's hearing.

The court also directed the PTI chief to appear before it on April 18.

During the hearing, Khan's lawyers requested to retain his bailable arrest warrant as he was facing security threats.

"Imran Khan has security concerns, his life is in danger, the Islamabad High Court has also issued notices for withdrawing security from him," the PTI chief's counsel said.

At this, the judge said that no one has appeared on behalf of the prosecution yet, let's see what they have to say.

Later, the court adjourned the hearing of the case till 11am.

After the break, Prosecutor Raja Rizwan Abbasi appeared in Civil Judge Malik Aman's court and opposed Imran Khan's plea for exemption from today's appearance.

The prosecutor said that Khan is absent and the bailable warrant should be changed to non-bailable.

"Even the plea is not signed by him."

After the arguments were completed by both parties on the plea, the court reserved the verdict which was announced later.

The charges, in this case, are related to a speech by Khan in which he allegedly threatened police and a female judge last year after one of his close aides, Shahbaz Gill, was denied bail in a sedition case.

The cricket star turned politician has faced a barrage of legal woes since his ouster in a confidence vote in April last year by a united opposition led by his successor, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

A convicted politician is liable to be disqualified for at least five years under the laws of the land.
